Fine food is an integral part of the Jan Harmsgat experience, complemented by handmade produce, fresh garden greens, organic vegetables, preserves grown on the farm and delectable dessert, diners are sure to be wowed. Our in-house restaurant serves fine dining in magical atmosphere. Guest can enjoy selecting wine from the cellar as well a large selection of fine whiskeys and liqueurs. We serve delicious breakfast, lunch and four course dinner in the original wine cellar building or outside, weather permitting. Jan Harmgat Country House is the perfect setting from which to explore the abundant delights offered by nearby Montagu (with hot mineral springs), the Breede River, Bontebok Park, Cape Agulhas, the De Hoop Nature Reserve (offering exceptional whale watching in season), and the delightful town of Swellendam itself, the third oldest town in South Africa, and well worth exploring. The nearby Robertson wine route is renowned for several festivals: Wacky Wine Weekend in June, Roberstson Slow Food weekend mid August, and the Wine & Food on the river event at the end of October.
For less adventurous souls, or those intent on just a gentle stay-over, there are easy strolls and walks among the orchards - or simply relaxing by the lavender-surrounded pool. Indigenous wildlife such as springbuck, grey rheebuck and ostriches can be seen from an open-vehicle drive on the 680-hectare farm, along with many smaller creatures and birds.
Fine wines have been a tradition here almost for three centuries, and the impressively-stocked wine cellar is nestled in the farm’s original fermentation tank. Neighboring wine estates on the Robertson Wine Route welcome you to sample their acclaimed wares.
Granted as a “freehold farm” in 1723, the historically significant Jan Harmans’ schat (“Jan Harmans Treasure”) has been at the heart of the regions rich history, and featured in the writings of Lady Anne Barnard. Her extensive grounds house two standard and six luxury rooms, a quaint, private family cottage and a romantic and secluded honeymoon suite set in abundant gardens and sheltered by aged oak trees. Each luxury accommodation has conceded to every modern convenience whilst unique, restored (mostly by Richard) antiques, retain the Victorian feel of the Manor House and a bygone era.
The Manor House itself boasts the most exquisite light and airy conservatory, which Richard built in true English style, a cosy fire-lit bar and lounge, an intimate dining room and a typical country kitchen. The warmth of the original wooden floors, ceilings and doors coupled with many quirky antique pieces creates a wonderful welcoming ambience and guests are encouraged to ‘kuier’* here.

Meals are made with love and served with true Schoone Oordt flair and style. The freshest best quality produce from small local suppliers is sourced as organically and ethically as possible, as well as fresh herbs and occasional veggies from the garden. Breakfasts are traditionally a gourmet affair and our little country hotel has developed quite a reputation for them.
Complimentary afternoon tea with home-baked savoury and sweet goodies is served overlooking the garden on sunny summer afternoons. In winter, complimentary snack platters and a warming welcome drink are offered on arrival. Intimate, delicious dinners are served in The Conservatory Restaurant where guests can enjoy a carefully prepared, sophisticated South African menu with wines sourced (by Sonette) from the celebrated verdant regions surrounding Swellendam; Robertson and Hermanus. Talented Chef Wander is well on his way to building The Conservatory Restaurant into one of the finest of Swellendam Restaurants.

Enjoy our paradise! Built in 1834, the stately Rothman Manor comprises several buildings in the Cape Dutch style on 3.5 hectares. Our guesthouse is situated at the beginning of the famous Garden Route in Swellendam, South Africa, about 200km east of Cape Town. Relax while you enjoy the private atmosphere of the largest historic estates in Swellendam. Each room is decorated with great attention to detail in a blend of African and European style. Suite Romance
This room impresses because of the combination of blue wall colour, wrought-iron furniture and its original bamboo ceiling. An overlarge and inviting king-size-bed forms the focal point of the room. Cane Room
A well-appointed room with all necessary comforts. The tasteful furnishings consist of two single beds, specially made cane furniture and an antique wardrobe made from satinwood. The bathroom is equipped with a shower. The room opens onto the patio and swimming pool.
Suite Esprit
This very spacious suite is in the new building. The generous size of over 55m². and its private patio with view to the dam and Nature Park will give you a very comfortable stay. The bathroom offers a bath with separate shower.

This is the second suite in the new building. It offers the same luxurious comfort as the Suite Esprit but is has its own sundeck near the pool as well as a Spa-bath. An ideal suite for a honeymoon.

The top-of -the range with its size of over 90sqm comes with a separate lounge to the bedroom and even a small kitchenette for the ones who want to spoil themselves.
